Diver finds Barbie in river, viral doll now up for auction

Ed Bieber, a Wisconsin man known as “Ed the Diver,” has been cleaning local waterways for about five years, and his most recent find, a 1990s Barbie doll, has sparked an unexpected eBay auction.”Started out just picking up fishing lures on the banks and in the water, trying to get my own lures back and then it ended up eventually escalating over the years to scuba diving, picking up all the trash in the water, finding people’s lost property, stolen property, and returning it to them,” Bieber said.Bieber’s cleanup efforts extend beyond the water. “We’re also going to beaches and popular swimming spots to clean up broken glass, cans, anything that could hurt people while they’re swimming,” Bieber said.On a typical cleanup dive, Bieber can remove around 100 pounds of trash or more, depending on the items. “When I have my kayak, we’re throwing bicycles in there, rims, brake parts, lures, cans, bottles, garbage, glass,” Bieber said.A friend of Bieber’s added, “You name it, we’ve found it in there,” highlighting the variety of items they’ve discovered.Bieber’s efforts have a significant impact on the health of the lakes and the wildlife that inhabit them. His most recent interesting find was the Barbie doll he discovered while cleaning the Wolf River.”I was up close to the dam, the gates were closed and I was getting a lot of beer cans, soda cans out of there, and then I see Barbie sticking out of the rocks and I grabbed her. First one I’ve ever found, and I was pretty excited,” Bieber said.After friends suggested he sell the Barbie, Bieber started an auction on eBay, with the starting bid at 99 cents.”And it just blew up. Within a day, it was up to $100 and I think right now it’s up to $450 with one day left on bidding,” Bieber said.One of the bidders is Ryan Ruebl with Meanwhile in Wisconsin, a popular Facebook page, who already has a spot picked out for the doll.”Right next to this photo of Charlie Berens, ‘You Betcha Guy,’ and I ice drinking. And would you look at that, there’s already a sign that says Crandon Barbie. That looks like the perfect spot. Anyway, get out there and help Ed the Diver raise money for our Wisconsin waterways clean up,” Ruebl said in a video.Bieber is planning a cleanup tour this summer and will post his diving locations to invite others to join in the effort.
