Anne Hathaway gets real about the more uncomfortable aspects of filmmaking.
During a recent interview with V Magazine, Hathaway shared how she felt about having to do chemistry tests with different actors early in her career, explaining that “it was considered normal to ask an actor to kiss with other actors” during filming. audition process in the early 2000s.
“Which is actually the worst way to do it,” she told the outlet about the practice. “I was told, 'We have ten guys coming today and you're chosen. Aren't you excited to hug all of you?' And I thought, 'Is there something wrong with me?' because I wasn't excited. I thought it looked disgusting.
“And I was so young and painfully aware of how easy it was to lose everything by being called 'difficult,' so I just pretended to be excited and carried on. For her part, as producer of her latest film, “The Idea of You”, the actress changed the casting process for the male lead.
“We asked each of the actors who came to choose a song that they thought their character would love, that they would put on to make my character dance, and then we would do a little improv,” she explained. “I was sitting in a chair like we were coming back from dinner or a walk or something. We pressed play and we just started dancing together.”
Ultimately, they chose Nicholas Galitzine, who Hathaway said “charmed the whole room” during his audition. She described seeing the film's director, Michael Showalter, “radiant” as he watched the two of them dance to a song by The Alabama Shakes.

However, it hasn't always been easy for the actress, as she was the subject of massive online hate following her work co-hosting the 2011 Oscars with James Franco, telling Vanity Fair in March that she missed out on roles because executives “were so concerned about toxicity [her] identity had gone online.
“I had an angel in Christopher Nolanwho didn't care and gave me one of the best roles I've ever had in one of the best films I've ever been a part of,” she told the outlet, referring to the hit 2014, “Interstellar.”
“I don’t know if he knew he was supporting me at the time, but it had that effect,” she admitted. “And my career didn’t lose momentum like it might have if he hadn’t supported me.”
She further explained that although the experience of being called toxic on the internet was humiliating, she learned that the only way to get through difficult times was to “not let yourself be boxed in.”

“You have to stay bold, and that can be difficult because you think, 'If I stay safe, if I hug the middle, if I don't draw too much attention to myself, it won't hurt.' But if you want to do that, don’t be an actor,” she explained.
