MINNEAPOLIS — Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis exited Friday’s 110-92 loss to the Timberwolves early with a left knee injury and will undergo an MRI on Saturday after the team flies to Chicago, according to Lakers coach Frank Vogel.
“So far all is in good structure, but want to take another image,” a source familiar with Davis’ injury told ESPN when asked about the All-Star big man’s knee.
It will be the third evaluation Davis will have had on the knee in the past week. He also underwent an ultrasound on Monday after missing two games with left knee soreness and was seen by the Wolves’ team doctor after Friday’s game.
Davis suffered the injury with 6 minutes, 41 seconds remaining in the third quarter and the Lakers trailing 63-58, when LeBron James was called for an offensive foul for pushing off on the Wolves’ Jaden McDaniels. Not only did the play cost the Lakers a turnover, but McDaniels lost his balance and tumbled into Davis’ left knee, causing the injury, which the Lakers termed a left knee contusion.
Davis attempted to limp off the court to the Lakers’ locker room without any assistance, but ESPN’s broadcast cameras caught Davis collapsing to the ground in pain when making his way through the tunnel.
“Hopefully it’s something minor and he’ll be back soon,” Vogel said. “But we’ll find out tomorrow.”
It was a tough night overall for Davis, who also turned his right ankle in the first quarter which also required him to go to the locker room for treatment.
Davis finished with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting, one rebound, one block and three turnovers in 20 minutes against Minnesota.
“I asked him how he’s doing, he said, ‘Find out more tomorrow,'” said James. “So that’s all we know.”
After missing 36 of the Lakers’ 72 games last season because of various injuries, Davis has been healthier this season, and his game has reflected that. His scoring average, shooting percentage, rebounds per game and blocks per game numbers have all increased from a year ago.
“My concern is always for his health,” James said. “You always wish for the best for any of your teammates but especially a guy like AD. So you wish for the best and leave it up to the man above’s hands.”
