Six dead, including suspect, after stabbing at Australian shopping center

At least six people died after a stabbing attack in Australia on Saturday afternoon, including the suspect who was shot dead by a police officer, authorities confirmed.

The incident took place at Bondi Junction Westfield, a six-level shopping center in Sydney.

New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner Anthony Cooke confirmed at a news conference that six people, including the attacker, had died. He said the lone suspect was shot by a police officer who was alone.

“She confronted the offender who had by this point moved to level five [of the mall] as she continued to walk quickly behind him to catch up. He turned, faced her and raised a knife. She discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased,” Cooke said.

Eight other people were taken to hospital for treatment. Australian media reported that an infant was among those stabbed by the suspect.

Cooke said the suspect was in the mall, then left before returning and began stabbing people in the center.

The motive, if any, and the identity of the suspect are unknown at this time.
