For days, a man attempted to bring home his pet parrot after the rare bird got loose during a photoshoot. In the end, an insatiable craving for some Doritos brought the bird safely back into his owner’s arms.

After getting away from his owner, Samba, a 15-year-old Catalina macaw, spent three days perched high in a 40-foot-tall tree in Lewisville, Texas, which is in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.

And the bird, also known as a rainbow macaw, wouldn’t budge for anyone or anything — including other snacks.

The parrot’s owner, Giulio Ferrari told KTVT he spent three days — and three sleepless nights — trying to bring his beloved bird back home. He wasn’t alone in the effort.

“We tried with the fire department, we tried with tree climbers, and we tried food,” Ferrari told KTVT.

But when Ferrari busted out a bag of Doritos — the bird simply couldn’t resist. And when Samba got close enough, Ferrari was able to get ahold of him.

Ferrari said he doesn’t typically feed the bird “junk food,” but he’s glad the tasty treat was able to bring his feathered friend back home.

“I’m relieved. I haven’t slept well in three days because it’s like your child. Your child is up stuck in a tree, and nobody can get him down,” Ferrari told KTVT, also joking that the bird was enjoying the chips so much that he was trying to eat the whole bag.

“Yeah, it’s a special day. He can use the calories, and he’s getting happy now,” he joked.

After getting Samba down from the tree, Ferrari took the bird to the vet.

He said Samba was attacked by hawks while up in the tree but the bird is happy and seems fine now.
