Pittsburgh teen accused of shooting man multiple times from back of truck

Authorities have arrested a teenager in connection with the shooting death of a Pittsburgh man Friday night.Detectives took 18-year-old Malachi Smith into custody the same night of the shooting. Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert for 17 rounds just after 10 p.m. on the 600 block of Sherwood Avenue.They found Isreal Walker-Young lying in the grass, shot multiple times in the chest and leg. He later died at the hospital.Pittsburgh Police viewed city-cameras which allegedly showed a truck stopping at an intersection with at least four people inside. One of those people, allegedly in the bed of the truck, pointed a pistol toward a group of bystanders standing on a sidewalk. That person then fired the gun several times, according to authorities.The truck takes off from camera view, but authorities say a person is then running in the middle of the grassy area, shooting at the truck before collapsing.The truck was later found on Stafford Street with people nearby. An officer told the group to surrender, however authorities say two ran from the area.Pittsburg authorities say they set up a perimeter in an attempt to catch the fleeing group and detained them in the process.The person who was still standing at the truck, as well as the three witnesses were all interviewed by authorities.One witness identified Smith as the person who fired the gunshots from the back of the truck. That witness stated they “observed ‘Mal Mal’ holding a gun and firing toward the ground, in the direction of the people,” the criminal complaint states.The Violent Crime Unit detectives made the arrest with the assistance of the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, Violence Apprehension Unit, Violence Prevention Unit and the US Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive task force.Smith was arrested on a criminal homicide charge and carrying a firearm without a license.
