A manhunt is underway in Ohio for the suspect who killed a military veteran, who had been with the Euclid Police Department for less than a year, during an ambush Saturday night.
According to WJW, shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin, 23, was killed when a gunman ambushed him during a call for a disturbance at a residence.
Derbin was transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries, WJW reported.
The suspect, who Euclid police identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, remains at large and officers say he is considered “armed and extremely dangerous.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies were assisting the Euclid Police Department in locating Vaughn, who was described as approximately 6'3 and 215 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Police believe Vaughn, who is a convicted felon and wanted for violating the conditions of his community supervision, fled the scene and may have been driving a white 2017 Volkswagen Passat with a temporary license plate in his rear window.
Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer told WJW that Derbin was an “incredible” person and that the entire department was “devastated.”
“He was an incredible human being. Just a big heart. He had an incredible smile. The world is better with him in it,” Meyer said.

Derbin had been an officer with the department for 10 months, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost released a statement and pledged to ensure justice is served.
“The Pledge to Protect is signed with the blood of our officers. The killer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and given full justice,” Yost wrote in a statement on X.
Yost continued his message, sharing his condolences with Derbin's family.
“It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother's Day and that this murder has occurred just as we prepare to celebrate our deaths during Police Memorial Week. My “My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department was in his first year with the department,” – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also extended his condolences to the Euclid community.
“Fran and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin and his siblings at @Euclid_PD. His courage and dedication to the Euclid community will not be forgotten,” DeWine wrote in a message on X.

DeWine proclaimed that in honor of Officer Derbin's life and service, all flags would be flown at half-staff on all public buildings on the grounds of Cuyahoga County, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffle Center and Rhodes State Office Tower on Sunday. and will remain at half mast until sunset on the day of his funeral. He added that all public buildings in the state of Ohio could also participate.
Derbin was engaged to Liv Wuebker. The couple was set to get married July 27 in Minister, Ohio, according to their wedding page on The Knot.
“A terrible tragedy. We will miss you Jacob. Thank you for serving your country in Kuwait and continuing to serve and protect your community when you return. Most of all, thank you for coming to our family and loving us all. “Especially Liv. You will always be a part of our family, and forever my first brother, we will always miss you,” Skylar Wuebker, Officer Derbin’s future sister-in-law, wrote in a Facebook post.
