A five-alarm fire interrupted Easter services at a Brooklyn Catholic church on Sunday, prompting a massive response from New York firefighters.

The fire broke out at Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii on Seigel Street in Bushwick shortly before 2 p.m.

A video posted on X showed flames shooting out of the church.

At least six people were being treated for injuries sustained in the fire, the FDNY said on X. The injured included three parishioners and three firefighters, and all of their injuries were believed to be minor.

Firefighters said parishioners smelled smoke, evacuated the building and called for help.

“While Easter services were taking place, parishioners smelled smoke and were immediately evacuated. There were around 150 parishioners inside. We intervened in the building next to the church,” said the first Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer. “The fire was intense and quickly escalated to five alarms.”

Firefighters said the fire was extinguished on the first floor, but spread to the second floor. The church portion of the building was saved except for some water damage, authorities said.

“One of our firefighters fell from the second floor to the first floor while fighting the fire. Other firefighters called out a rescue message, and not realizing that the rescue message was for him, he bounced on the ground and wanted to run back up. “He was not injured and was able to continue fighting the fire. It just shows the courage of all of our members as they are out here trying to save lives,” said Deputy Chief Michael Meyers.

The fire was under control as of 5:18 p.m. and FDNY firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.

“People are very connected to their parish, so when you see a fire ravaging the parish center and the presbytery, you know that these people who were in mass came out safe and sound… They are not going to fully enjoy the joy of Easter today because they are mourning what happened to their own church,” Diocese of Brooklyn spokesman John Qualione told PIX 11 News.
