Alleged hit-and-run driver told PA police he thought he hit pothole

Charges have been filed against a man months after a hit-and-run seriously injured an older woman in Greensburg.Christopher M. Degnan faces multiple charges, including accidents involving death or personal injury, aggravated assault by vehicle, and reckless driving.Greensburg police were asking the public to provide any information about his whereabouts.“Chris, if you’re watching this, you know, do yourself a favor and just go and turn yourself in to the city of Greensburg Police Department,” Detective Sgt. Justin Scalzo said Friday.A few hours later, police said the man did surrender.According to the criminal complaint, on Dec. 28, 2023, an officer on patrol found an older woman lying in the middle of South Maine Street and West Third Street.Officials said that the woman had life-threatening injuries, including severe head trauma. Authorities were able to determine the woman was hit by a car that left the scene South.During the investigation, police found part of a Honda turn signal, and two surveillance cameras allegedly caught a white Honda near the scene. Police said they then traced the car to Degnan and found some fabric from the victim’s clothing on the passenger side hood of the car.According to a criminal complaint, during an interview with police, they told Degnan he hit a woman. Degnan allegedly replied with an expletive, telling authorities, “I thought it was a pothole.” Degnan then added: “I looked at the light (traffic signal) to make sure and it (the car) went boom.”“Degnan admitted that he was in that intersection around the time of the hit and run, but his account was he thought he just hit a pothole. You know, again, he hit this woman, left her for dead, and did not render any type of aid whatsoever. And thank God that she survived from all of her injuries,” Scalzo said.Police said the victim was on life-support for a period of time but is doing better, and they hope to see her make a full recovery.
