A Nebraska zoo announces birth of female pygmy hippopotamus calf

There’s an adorable new addition at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska.The zoo announced that Adama, a female pygmy hippopotamus calf, was born on June 16.Adama was born to 24-year-old mom Chomel, and the zoo said that she’s “already enjoying her time swimming and exploring her habitat in the Lied Jungle.” The zoo said the Adama weighs about 50 pounds, but will grow to between 350 to 600 pounds.”With pygmy hippos listed as endangered, Adama’s birth is a significant addition to the zoo-based population of this species, which currently includes about 100 pygmy hippopotamus across 15 organizations accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums,” the zoo said in a Facebook post.
