Zorro on France 2: what is the series with Jean Dujardin worth? [critique]
“Like what Michel Hazanavicius and Jean-François Halin did with the spy ofOSS 117This Zoro by Benjamin Charbit (Gagarin) and Noé Debré (Parliament) is a pure recreation, a clever reinvention, we wrote when we discovered it a few weeks ago. The duo of authors makes him a weary vigilante who has put away the mask for twenty years, but whom the nocturnal cavalcades have filled with pride and self-importance. His accession to the seat of councilor of Los Angeles and the irruption of a crooked notable in the city will force him to return to service.
After these eight episodes of adventure and comedy, does the team intend to continue the story of Zorro and the terrible Sergeant Garcia (here played brilliantly by Grégory Gadebois)? To our colleagues atAllocinatedBenjamin Charbit responds in the negative:
“Quite honestly, I don't have any answers. I thought of the series more as a fairly closed object that will inspect the recesses of this mask… I feel like I've said what I had to say about Zorro. I want to be interested in other characters.“
During his interview with Firstthe same co-creator of the show explained, regarding the adaptation rights of Zorohaving been very careful that others could reclaim the myth after them:
“What you need to know is that the character of Zorro is in the public domain. The only thing protected by rights is the costume! I was very free editorially, I believe that having -droit had some concerns at the beginning but he was convinced by the texts. Afterwards, they are stories of negotiation, and I know that Marc Dujardin (Jean's brother, who is at the origin of the series) is. is beaten. There was a right of inspection, but. we didn't receive any notes or requests for rewrites. Maybe if I had damaged Zorro too much, there would have been a problem. We're still quite far into the series, but I wanted to make the character intact. , may there be other Zorros after ours.”
After this phenomenon series, Jean Dujardin will return to the cinema next October in a new version of The Shrinking Man. An ambitious project which marks his reunion with Jan Kounen (99 Francs).
