Why Gary Sinise quit his acting career

The famous Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump lost his son to a rare bone cancer.

“I had to stop.”

Interviewed by Fox Newsthe actor Gary Sinise explains his choice to move away from the cameras for several years. Famous for Forrest Gump (1994) by Robert Zemeckis or for the series CSI: Manhattan (2004-2013), he has not been seen in cinema or television since 2020, in projects filmed between 2018 and 2019: I still believe it, Good Joe Bell and the 4th season of 13 Reasons Why.

The 69-year-old actor is currently returning to the United States to promote his son's album entitled Resurrection & Revival: Part 2. Passionate about music, he was trained at USC's Thornton School of Music, but his work is released posthumously, because McCanna Sinise died at the beginning of 2024 from bone cancer.

It was in 2018 that “Mac” was diagnosed, at which time Gary's wife, Moira Harris, was also diagnosed with cancer. Sinise preferred to abandon all his acting projects immediately, and decided to move from Los Angeles to Nashville to also be closer to his mother.

“We were immersed in this battle against cancer, he says. My wife had just discovered that she had breast cancer, then my son found out about his, which was very rare. All this in two months apart. My father had just had a stroke and my mother was alone, so I had to take care of her. I had so much to deal with.”

“It's all been so hard, continues the actor, after explaining that his wife is now out of danger. Our son was fighting this illness without being able to be treated. Trying to find painkillers or doctors, anyone who could help him… it became like a full-time job.”

“I had to stop. Being away from my family for long periods of time had become impossible given everything we were going through, he concludes, explaining his desire to return to the forefront, this time to publicize his son's work. Thanks to this album he achieved something that was close to his heart. We were able to record his music as he wanted in May, and we made an entire album from it. This project brought me a lot of joy, I was happy to see him enjoying these moments.”
