What fate awaits Oz and Sofia Falcone from now on?
For 8 episodes, The Penguin managed the small feat of making people forget that the series was derived from The Batman. Oswald Cobb's rise from the depths of Gotham to power ended in a very beautiful way, with a final episode (to watch on Max) which mischievously makes the link with The Batman 2. Spoiler alert!
The series – of which season 2 is still far from being guaranteed – ends with the appearance of the famous Bat-Signal in the sky of the metropolis. “We were looking for an elegant way to pass the baton to The Batman 2“ explains showrunner Lauren LeFranc to Variety. “It seemed appropriate to have the Bat-Signal calm Oz's enthusiasm a little by telling him, “You haven't reached the top yet.” “He conquered his world, but there is a much bigger world up there…”
We already know that The Penguin will take a central place in The Batman 2. The actor Colin Farrell will be back facing Robert Pattinson. And Cristin Milioti ? Sofia Falcone aka Sofia Gigante was one of the great successes of the HBO series. And obviously, we hope to find her in the sequel to the cinema. After being sent back to Arkham Asylum by Oz, Sofia fails in her quest for power and ends up in a cell: “It's a fate worse than death for her…” assures his interpreter. But one letter will change everything.
As Sofia languishes under the dubious protection of Dr. Julian Rush (Theo Rossi), she receives an unexpected letter from a half-sister whose existence she didn't know: Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz). In The Batman (in 2021), we learned that she was the illegitimate daughter of Carmine Falcone. “I love this connection!”
However, it is not possible to bring Selina Kyle earlier in the story (even outside the box).) “because I did not have the right to use the character in the series”justifies the showrunner. “But I think it was good for Sofia in the end. Because we gave it a lot more room to exist. By bringing Selina into the picture, it would have been easy to get carried away with that, and push the other characters aside.”
What does Selina say to Sofia in her letter?
Milioti refuses to say it. However, a letter was indeed written, by Lauren LeFranc herself. But its content still remains secret. “It has a huge meaning for me… in the way we relate to the character we play” mysteriously tease Cristin Miliotiwho does not yet know if Sofia will appear in The Batman II. “I think it's a question of hope. Even if it's not something familiar to Sofia…” smiles the actress, who assures that she “is just getting started. The series spans only a few weeks, maybe a month or something. So I definitely want to see her again. So that it wreaks more havoc!”
Lauren LeFranc she herself promises that she is not aware of the details of The Batman 2. But the director Matt Reeves, at the controls of this universe, ensures that “The Penguin and the other spin-offs being considered aim to delve into Gotham's rogues gallery and give them the origins that we are not able to give them in the film, so that when they return in the film, these characters are already interesting…”
The Batman: Part II will be released in cinemas on October 2, 2026, almost 5 years after the first part.
