“The superhero balloon had become much too big,” analyzes Eric Kripke for Première.

A new balance of power has been necessary in Hollywood for several months. While the Marvel Universe has been losing momentum since Avengers: Endgame and a series of setbacks (Ant-Man 3, The Marvels…), the superheroic counterculture is slowly taking power.

As leader, The Boys, the Prime Video series, opened the way to a new bloody trend, which plays with benevolent avengers, to deliver a harsher and more realistic painting. Evidenced by the success of the animated series Invincible (soon available in live action) or the upcoming arrival of the DC film The Authority. So are trashy superheroes replacing classic Marvel superheroes?

For the creator of The BoysEric Kripke, this “Superhero fatigue” was inevitable, the phenomenon of wear and tear having already appeared in bookstores:

“In fact, what we see on screens today is a reflection of what happened in bookstores in the comic book world before,” analysis Eric Kripke for Première. “There was a first wave of classic superhero comics which was a hit, and then a second wave of more subversive comics, which played with the image of superheroes. I believe that we are currently witnessing a this same phenomenon on TV and in the cinema was one of the pioneers, it's true, but if it hadn't been us, it would have been someone else.”

The creator of the successful Prime Video saga explains the phenomenon as follows:

“The superhero balloon had become much too big and it was necessary for someone to face a hole in it. Here we are. It's a wave that is rising at the moment. Doom Patrol, Invincible and others in are part. Because people want to see new things. These new series are refreshing, they bring something different and that's why they work more and more.

Season 4 of The Boys can be seen right now on Prime Video.
