Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, compared the threat from former President Trump to America's existential wars, just over a month after the attempted assassination of the 45th president.

On the fourth and final day of MSNBC's coverage of the Democratic National Convention, Pelosi appeared on the network to discuss the party's mission to defeat Trump in November, who she said poses as great a threat to democracy as the British government was during the American Revolution.

“The times have found us,” Pelosi told network anchor Andrea Mitchell, noting that liberals face the same challenges they faced in 1776 and then during the Civil War.

“We must defeat an individual who poses a threat to our democracy of a kind we have never seen before. In the early days of our country, Thomas Paine said that time has found us. Let us declare war, let us establish a new nation.”

She went on to compare this period to another difficult time in American history.

“Abraham Lincoln took on that responsibility to hold our country together years later – decades later – and now the times have found us to save our democracy,” she said, adding, “That’s what we’re here for.”

Pelosi's dark characterization of the former president comes just over a month after President Biden urged the party to tone down the charged political rhetoric following the attempted assassination of Trump.

On the night of the Trump shooting, Biden addressed Americans: “My fellow Americans, I want to talk to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in politics. Remember that while we may disagree, we are not enemies. We are neighbors, friends, colleagues, citizens, and most importantly, we are our fellow Americans. We must stand together.”

X users criticized Pelosi for the statement.

Conservative digital strategist Greg Price shared a clip of Pelosi's remarks, commenting: “Nancy Pelosi says defeating President Trump is like defeating the British and the Confederacy because he represents a 'threat to democracy on a scale we've never seen.' It's only been a month since the guy was nearly assassinated.”

PR expert Chris Barron asked: “Remind me again which side is threatening political violence?”

Conservative columnist Eddie Zipper responded: “That's what the woman who canceled all Democratic primaries says.”

Pro-Trump commentator Collin Rugg made the same comment, adding: “This is the woman who staged a coup against the democratically appointed candidate saying that.”

Columnist Miranda Devine said: “Bad woman.”
