Also a small start for The Substance, the film by Coralie Fargeat with Demi Moore, which had nevertheless caused a stir at Cannes.

Optimus Prime and Megatron have known more glorious hours. Expected as a big hit of this fall, the animated film Transformers: First Class (Or Transformers One in the original version) – which will be released in France on October 23 – has failed to attract crowds across the Atlantic.

The spectacular blockbuster, directed by Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4), has started its career at the US box office below expectations with 25 million dollars in 4000 theaters, over the last three days. A mixed launch for this big production at 75 million dollars which aimed better, with its star cast: Chris Hemsworth And Scarlett Johansson to do the voices. The saga was especially accustomed to more impressive scores, it which accumulates 5.28 billion dollars in seven films at the box office. The latest installment, Transformers: Rise of the Beastsfor example, opened at 60 million during the summer of 2023 to end at 440 million overall.

Warner Bros.

Transformers: First Class must therefore be content with second place at the US box office, behind the unbeatable Beetlejuice 2which maintains the lead in the rankings for the third consecutive week, with $26 million in 4,172 theaters. The Warner Bros. sequel has already grossed $225 million in the United States and $330 million worldwide.

For the record, the first Beetlejuice had finished with $74.7 million in revenue in North America and $170 million worldwide in 1988. A box office already largely exceeded.

Among other new features, The Substance – which will be released in France on November 6th only – is also struggling. The horror satire carried by a Demi Moore praised during its Cannes premiere, had to settle for 6th place with 3.1 million dollars in almost 2000 theaters. A somewhat disappointing score for the French film Coralie Fargeatwhich arrived in theaters preceded by a nice buzz.

Mother Land Halle Berry

Another French director made his return to American theaters this weekend, without much more success. Alexandra Aja revealed Mother Land – which will be released in France on Wednesday – and climbs to fourth place at the US box office, with a disappointing $4.5 million from 2,600 theaters. A low score for this thriller led by Halle Berryknowing that Crawlthe last Aja, had opened to 12 million (in 2019) and ended at 90 million dollars in revenue worldwide, including 40 million in the USA. Apparently, Mother Land won't do as well.
