The director was partly inspired by Operation Flagship, a film conducted in the United States to catch fugitives… by inviting them to an American football match.

Trapthe new film by M. Night Shyamalan, features a serial killer (Josh Harnett) who accompanies his daughter to a pop star concert, only to realize that the police have set a trap for him. An eminently amusing scenario whose origins the director details in an interview with Empire. He explains that he had this simple but devilishly effective idea: “ What if The Silence of the Lambs took place during a Taylor Swift concert? “But that's not all, since Shyamalan also admits to having been inspired by Operation Flagship.

In December 1985, the United States Marshals Service sent out more than 3,000 invitations to a football game to fugitives they wanted to catch. The invitations assured the “invitees” that their names had been selected to attend a game between the Washington Redskins and the Cincinnati Bengals. They were even offered free transportation and a raffle to possibly attend the Super Bowl, all expenses paid.

And so on December 15, 1985, 101 of the 3,000 guests showed up to pick up their tickets. More than 150 officers were waiting for them, disguised as cheerleaders, caterers, and maintenance staff. Once at the stadium entrance, the criminals were registered and taken to a separate room, in groups of about 15 people. Then 25 armed police officers stormed the room and handcuffed them. The operation was repeated until all 101 fugitives were in custody.

A crazy story that made Shyamalan laugh a lot: “ It was hilarious. The cops were literally cheerleaders and mascots. These guys were dancing as they came in. And they all got caught. It was so twisted and funny. »

Trap was released this Wednesday in theaters in France. Trailer:
