After Hippocrate And Country Doctor, Thomas Lilti continued in 2018 its exploration of the French medical world by this time tackling its source: the first year of study sanctioned by the famous competition.
In his film First Year, to be seen again this evening on Arte and in replay on the channel's websiteit brings together the cream of the new generation of French cinema actors: Vincent Lacoste And William Lebghil. The director films a neo here bromance against the backdrop of denunciation of the absurdity of our educational system.

First Year – Vincent Lacoste: “We didn't understand anything of our dialogues”
When it came out, First had been a little less enthusiastic in front of First year than in front Hippocrate Or Country Doctorwhile acknowledging that the film was not lacking in qualities:
Like his two previous features, First year ticks all the boxes of a solid screenplay and conscientious popular cinema. The documentation is precise, the review of major social issues is skillfully measured (rivalries and other underhandedness between students, vocation against social reproduction, working conditions at university… we even have a quick swerve on immigration) and the storytelling is perfectly crafted with just the right amount of drama, fantasy and humor. The two main actors (William Lebghil and Vincent Lacoste) are impeccable and their chemistry is perfect, as we had hoped. This is probably the only limitation of the film: everything is there, tidy, in order. The copy is clean, but also very predictable. No need for a probe to understand that there is a lack of mystery or surprise in this slightly too calibrated cinema.
