Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande take on Jeff Goldblum in this magical, fairytale adaptation that promises to be a great fantasy film.

Cynthia Erivo defies gravity in new trailer for Wicked (below). On her broomstick, the young witch Elphaba tries to escape the clutches of the disturbing Wizard of Oz, played by Jeff Goldblumwho would like to make the young girl with green skin, different and powerful, the enemy against whom his people can once again unite and come together.

Universal

The analogy is obvious and described in detail in this new trailer put online by Universal, which also shows in detail this magical world of Wickedbefore Dorothy and her friends arrive in Oz. We discover the first meeting of Elphaba and Glinda (Ariana Grande) at the magic school called Shiz University. A friendship will be born between them as they embark on an adventure through Oz and the Emerald City, battling the powerful Wizard and his army of flying monkeys.

It's funny to note that this second official trailer is not the same as the one intended for the American market. The US trailer (below) focuses much more on the song “Gravity”, a cult anthem of Wicked across the Atlantic… but largely unknown here. Because the film will in fact be the adaptation of the Broadway play, a musical seen by tens of millions of people for almost three decades, in New York. But much less famous here, that's a fact. So, for France, Universal describes less a musical than a great colorful and epic fantasy film, in an impressive magical world.

Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan BaileyEthan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James and Keala Settle will round out the cast.

The official synopsis says “legendary witches from the world of Oz. Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood because of the unusual color of her green skin who does not even suspect the extent of her powers. At her side, Glinda who, as popular as she is privileged, does not yet know the true nature of her heart. Their meeting at the University of Shiz, in the fantastic world of Oz, marks the beginning of an improbable but deep friendship. However, their relationship with The Wizard of Oz will put this friendship to the test and see their paths move apart. While Glinda, thirsty for popularity, lets herself be seduced by power, Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself and to those around her will have consequences as unfortunate as they are unexpected.
