Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, reveals to Première what awaits Lord of the Rings fans in the sequel to the Prime Video series.
As you return from vacation, Prime Video invites you to go back to Middle-earth! This Thursday, season 2 of the series will begin The Rings of Power. Eight episodes that will take us back to the Second Age, at the time of the rise of Sauron, who will hold a very special place this year. Never have fans of the Lord of the Rings had not seen the boss of Mordor in this light.
The True Face of Sauron
This time, Charlie Vickers no longer hides behind Halbrand's mask. Sauron revealed his true face at the end of season 1 and the actor tells us that he “breathed new authority into the character. He has a more intimidating posture. He has this self-confidence that commands respect..” The English actor speaks of the “power“which resides in this Sauron not yet in black armor, not yet general-in-chief of the Orcs, but already disturbing:
“He could destroy everything with the back of his hand if he wanted to. We explored this new physicality, all in restraint. It's better not to push him to the limit, because we don't really know what hell he would be capable of unleashing. It's this implication that makes it even more terrifying.“
Sauron superstar facing a devastated Galadriel when Season 2 begins. Because she realized she had been tricked, “his mind is in pieces” confesses to us Morfydd Clark. “He betrayed her and also showed her that she had a dark side. He showed Galadriel that she could be weak and vulnerable, that she could be evil. And so, she doesn't really know who she is anymore at the beginning of season 2. And yet, she has to get back in the saddle because Sauron is back…”
Mud, rain, dust…
Because evil is taking root in Middle-earth, and war seems inevitable. Both sides are now advancing openly and Charlie Vickers summary : “The game has been installed and this time we can play! For me, in Season 1, the people of Middle-earth were trying to contain the evil tide that was threatening to break out. In Season 2, the dam has burst and it's just chaos. Everyone is suffering… except Sauron.”
The mood will be darker, the atmosphere more tense, as the director describes it to us, Charlotte Brandstrom : “It will be a more authentic, more true season. It was important to me that it not be too clean. That there be mud, rain, dust. We filmed a lot of night battles, for months, and I asked the actors to roll around on the ground to be as dirty as possible (…) The premises of this season 2 are found in episodes 6 and 7 of season 1. Those of the great battle against the Orcs, those of the explosion of the volcano and the beginnings of Mordor. These are the dramatic elements at the base of the story of season 2 and suddenly, we get to the heart of the matter.”
The Magic of the Rings
Morfydd Clark promises thus “no more battle and no more big show“, because “If evil grows in Middle-earth, so does resistance. The two feed off each other..”
And at the heart of this confrontation, there will of course be the famous rings. Sauron will set about making others, after the one forged at the end of season 1. From “real characters” assure Morfydd Clark“who will, for the first time, really show their magic on screen.”
This will be seen from Thursday, in season 2 of Rings of Poweron Prime Video.
