The Australian actor has not signed a contract, according to the author of the original book. Nor the director Luca Guadagnino, for that matter.

Last month, and after years of rumors about a potential remake ofAmerican Psychowe learned that 25 years later Christian Bale, Austin Butler would succeed him in the role of the terrifying Patrick Bateman. This brand new adaptation of the book by Bret Easton Ellis should be staged by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Challengers) for Lionsgate.

The actor ofElvis And Dune 2 would have won the role by doubling in the final straight that ofEuphoria, Jacob Elordi (who also played Elvis recently, in the Priscilla by Sofia Coppola).

Was the announcement premature? Author Bret Easton Ellis has his own podcast, and in his latest episode he claims that this remake ofAmerican Psycho is nothing official. According to him, neither Luca Guadagnino nor Austin Butler have signed a contract for the film. However, he explains from the outset that if this project goes ahead, then he will not be involved, although he wrote the novel from which it will be adapted.

“I have the feeling that this is a fake news, declares Ellis. I heard somewhere, from someone, that there is no contract. Austin Butler hasn't signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn't have a contract either. Ditto for Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay. According to my various sources, this is fake news that was broadcast to see how the public would react. (…) If such a project exists, I am not involved, I have nothing to do with it, I might get some money if they do it, but I am not involved in the plan creative on any level. That's all I know.”

If Ellis visibly remains far from any adaptation ofAmerican Psycho25 years after Mary Herron's controversial adaptation, he is preparing many projects for the screen: his semi-autobiographical series The Shards should be made for HBO, under the direction of Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario) – note also that before him, it was Luca Guadagnino who had to take care of it. He will also make his long-awaited directorial debut with Relapseworn by Joseph Quinn (Gladiator II, Fantastic Fours). The story of a man who witnesses a brutal death at a party, under the influence of drugs, and who finds himself plunged into an unstable existential crisis when he enters rehab.
