A medical expert is sounding the alarm over the harmful causes of ultra-processed foods as a US teenager launches legal action against several food giants.

Bryce Martinez, 18, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and fatty liver at age 16 after drinking ultra-processed foods throughout his childhood, went after eleven food manufacturers for allegedly making addictive foods, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“What is an ultra-processed food?” explained Dr. Marc Siegel on “America Reports”. “It has emulsifiers, preservatives, colorings, things that make people want to eat more of it – even if it's empty calories, high fructose corn syrup, salt and sugar, things that are very bad for your health.”

The medical expert explained that these foods are prevalent on supermarket shelves across the country.

“We need to find a way to get healthy food out there instead,” he told Fox News. “I know they're more expensive, but maybe that's where the extras and the money to fix school meals should come from, to get them to where you don't have an alternative. People kids are going to eat at school, but they might find a tastier fry so they rush there, or something ultra colorful when you're really young, you know, trying to break out the Red Dye. Three because it looks so bright and so cherry that young children are attracted to it. Very, very unhealthy!

Evidence suggests these food also lead to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and weight gain, the doctor explained.

“It’s a long way to go, but we have to start very young with children,” he said. “(The) figure that over 40% of adults are obese, (and now) over 20% of children are obese and that’s a real challenge.”
