Utah teen stuck in Miami by himself during worldwide IT outage that caused airport chaos

The recent global IT outage has impacted travelers in a variety of ways. That includes a teenager who was making his way home to Utah after taking a humanitarian trip. Owen Richards, who is 16 years old, was coming home from a humanitarian trip to Uruguay, which is in South Africa. His trip home included a layover in Miami, Florida. As a result of the recent IT outage, Owen has been stuck in Miami since Thursday.Owen’s dad, Jeff Richards, told KSL that because Owen is a minor, he was unable to book himself a new flight, and didn’t have many other options. “Like he can’t rent a car, we look at all the options, I don’t think we’ve ever felt so stuck,” Jeff Richards told KSL’s Brian Carlson. It didn’t help that Delta put a temporary pause on all travel for unaccompanied minors. “Because minors are not allowed to travel, which is crazy to us, because it would seem like should prioritize minors who are unaccompanied to get them home, especially if they’re mid-travel,” Jeff said. The family was relentlessly trying to book a new flight for Owen, but have been met with what they said feel like endless cancellations and delays. Trying to avoid a nearly 40-hour drive to pick Owen up from Miami, the family was booking flights for Owen with multiple airlines in hopes that one of the flights would take off from Florida and bring Owen home to the Beehive State. While he’s trying to stay optimistic, Owen told KSL he was eager for one of the flights to work out. “I hope so, I really really hope so, because I’m here. I missed a swim meet, so I won’t be able to go to our version of States,” he said. Owen’s dad said the whole family is frustrated over the impact of the outage.”We’re super frustrated, I don’t think we’ve ever been more frustrated with a situation,” he said.A spokesperson from Salt Lake City Airport told KSL that Owen is one of many people impacted by the outage’s wrath. “You have aircraft that are scheduled, you have crews that are scheduled and there’s just a lot of shuffling and rescheduling that has to take place,” spokesperson Nancy Volmer said.See more of the story in the video player above.

As a result of the recent IT outage, Owen has been stuck in Miami since Thursday.

Owen’s dad, Jeff Richards, told KSL that because Owen is a minor, he was unable to book himself a new flight, and didn’t have many other options.

Owen’s dad said the whole family is frustrated over the impact of the outage.

“We’re super frustrated, I don’t think we’ve ever been more frustrated with a situation,” he said.

A spokesperson from Salt Lake City Airport told KSL that Owen is one of many people impacted by the outage’s wrath.

“You have aircraft that are scheduled, you have crews that are scheduled and there’s just a lot of shuffling and rescheduling that has to take place,” spokesperson Nancy Volmer said.
