Screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg will take charge of three new feature films in the galaxy. So how will they fit into the saga?

Lucasfilm's ways are inscrutable. What is the plan for Star Wars at the cinema? After the conclusion of the last trilogy, with The Rise of Skywalkerhalf a dozen projects have been launched. And here today is a brand new trilogy Star Wars is added to the mix. Simon Kinberg reached an agreement with the studio to develop these three films in the Galaxy of George Lukewhich he will write and produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy.

If Disney does not comment, it is Deadline which announces the news, specifying that this trilogy could correspond to the next chapters of the Skywalker saga: “I heard this would include Episodes X through XII of the Skywalker Saga which began with George Lucas' first film in 1977.” writes Deadline. “Internal sources disputed my reporting that Kinberg would continue this storyline, saying it would instead mark the start of a new saga and fit alongside ongoing Star Wars projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Donald Glover, as usual, Lucasfilm and Disney have no comment.”

Indeed, Variety announces for its part that Lucasfilm denies the idea of a trilogy following The Rise of Skywalker. “This will mark the start of a new saga with new characters after The Rise of Skywalker concluded the original nine-chapter “Skywalker Saga” in 2019..”

In short, it's still unclear. Especially since there already exists a Chapter X who doesn't say his name yet: Star Wars: New Jedi Order (working title) will bring back Daisy Ridley in 2026 at the cinema, in the film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoywhich will, for once, be the real sequel to Episode IX. So how might the pieces of the new trilogy fit into this puzzle?

While waiting for clarification from Lucasfilm, we can wonder about the choice of Simon Kinberg. The co-creator of Star Wars Rebels has already worked in the franchise world. But his work on the franchise X-Men (X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014 and X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016) has often been doubtful. It was he who notably carried out the terriblex X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) and we also owe him the production of the failed reboot of Fantastic Four from 2015…

The Mandalorian & Grogu,

Lucasfilm

It remains that this new trilogy Star Wars is clearly not for tomorrow. Simon Kinberg is “at the very beginning of development“. The filmmaker is also very busy at the moment with the remake of Running Manwhich he produced with director Edgar Wright, before embarking on the next film Star Trek. We therefore have no idea when it will enter production.

One thing seems certain: the next Star Wars film in theaters will be The Mandalorian & Groguby Jon Favreau, which will be released on May 20, 2026.
