The star of Alien, Working Girl, Ghostbusters and Avatar is honored: “I share this award with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with over the years.”

It's not just on Arte that Sigourney Weaver is the star of the moment. At the heart of the documentary subtitle Style heroinerecently available on the channel's website, the American actress will receive the Honorary Golden Lion at the end of the summer.

A year after director Liliana Cavani and actor Tony Leung, it is the actress with such an eclectic career who has been chosen “because she is a star who knew how to establish bridges between the most sophisticated independent cinema and popular films, attracting audiences in large numbers but always in a frank and original way, while remaining honest with herself”, we read in the press release from the Venice festival.

It is true that throughout her career, Sigourney Weaver has taken great pleasure in taking on a series of very eclectic projects. While we find throughout her filmography a pronounced taste for science fiction (her unforgettable incarnation of Ripley in the saga Alien initiated by Ridley Scott, of course, his supporting role in Ghostbustersits two key charactersAvatarby James Cameron, his self-deprecation of Galaxy Quest…), she also signed for dramatic works (A map of the world, Snow Cake…) or eco-friendly (Gorillas in the Mist), social comedies (Working Girl), adaptations of classics (The Merchant of Venicedirected by her husband Jim Simpson in 1986), thrillers (The Year of Living Dangerously, Copycat…), historical productions (1492: Christopher Columbus)… So many projects that have allowed her to convey the image of women who are in turn strong, fragile, determined, suffering, full of doubts or ambitions.

In her thank-you message, Sigourney Weaver emphasizes the collaborative aspect of her career: “I share this award with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with over the years.”says the one presented by the president of the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, as “a true collaborator, not just a malleable actress in the hands of a filmmaker, but an artist who has contributed fully to the success of the films of James Cameron, Paul Schrader, Peter Weir, Michael Apted, Roman Polanski, Ivan Reitman, Mike Nichols, Ang Lee and many others.”

The 2024 Venice Film Festival will take place from August 28 to September 7. It will be the 81st edition of the international film festival.
