A significant winter storm is getting closer. Winter weather alerts are out for Pittsburgh and areas to the south. We are still expecting the greatest impacts from snow and possible freezing rain and sleet along and south of I-70.We can’t overlook the feels like temperatures that are in the single digits or near zero this morning. The rest of this day before the storm will be cold with increasing clouds. The snow is set to arrive from the south after 10 PM and overspread the area before sunrise.Severe Weather Alert Day MondayThe Winter Storm Watch has been replaced by Winter Storm Warnings and Weather Weather Advisories. All winter alerts are in effect from 7 PM Sunday until 7 PM Monday.Winter Storm Warning for Fayette, Greene, Washington, Westmoreland, Monongalia, Preston, and Garrett counties.Winter Weather Advisories for Allegheny and Indiana counties.These areas not included in the winter weather alerts should still use continue even though snow totals won’t be as high.Monday remains a Severe Weather Alert Day, especially for the periods of heavy snow in the morning. The Pittsburgh area will wake up to a few inches of fresh snow with more to come. The majority of our accumulations will come before noon Monday.How much snow will we get?At this point, a sharp snowfall gradient looks to set up right through Allegheny County. Areas to the south will see higher totals; much less the farther north you are.The most significant snow will fall along and south of I-70. Six to ten inches are expected with locally higher amounts in the ridges and in West Virginia and western Maryland.A shift of the storm’s track by 25 miles north or south will adjust where the sharp accumulation gradient begins. That line now looks to run through Allegheny County. The South Hills could see significantly more snow than the North Hills. This is still the “tricky zone” for this storm.We are still confident that amounts will drop off to the north. Areas like Butler, New Castle, and Kittanning will see closer to one to three inches of fresh snow.There is also a chance that a brief period of freezing rain and sleet occurs in northern West Virginia. This would push some of the heavier snow north, potentially closer to Pittsburgh. Again a small shift in the storm’s path will have a big impact on how much snow falls.The cold and snow aren’t going anywherePeriodic snow showers and flurries will continue through at least Wednesday. Little to no additional accumulations are expected. Morning commutes could be a little slippery if any black ice forms. This snow will stick around as temperatures will cold with the coldest air coming mid- and late week. Single digit lows are possible Friday morning.Another winter storm could roll through the area next weekend with additional accumulations.
