Shrek 5 postponed to Christmas 2026

The sequel 16 years later will not be a summer blockbuster. Minions 3 takes its place.

Universal Pictures reverses positions! Two of the next biggest hits at the global box office have had their release dates moved.

Shrek 5 by DreamWorks Animation was scheduled for July 1, 2026 in theaters, exactly 16 years after the release of the previous part and 25 years after the first.

But ultimately, the film will wait a few more months and the end of year holidays. Shrek 5 will be released on Wednesday December 23 in cinemas, and therefore becomes a potential Christmas hit. Above all, he avoids a duel facing Toy Story 5which will be released at the end of June 2026 in cinemas.

Instead, Universal sends to the front Minions 3. The sequel, a hit already acquired from Illumination (the first two parts made 1 billion), was initially due to be released on June 30, 2027. Production is certainly on track, since the release has thus been brought forward by a year complete, in the summer of 2026.
