Shaler schools on half-day schedules Wednesday due to heat
YEAR WITH REPORTER CARLOS FLORES. IT IS THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS HERE IN THE SHALER AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND LEADERS HOPE SOME NEW INITIATIVES WILL HELP THEM ACCOMPLISH THEIR THEME FOR THE YEAR, WHICH IS TO ENGAGE, EMPOWER AND EXCEL. IT’S A DAY INTERIM PRINCIPAL JOANNE TOWNSEND SAYS THEY’VE BEEN EAGERLY WAITING FOR. I MEAN, WE’RE ALONE ALL SUMMER DOING ALL KINDS OF WORK TO GET READY, AND WHEN THESE KIDS SMILING FACES SHOW UP, IT REMINDS US, ALL OF US ADULTS OF OUR PURPOSE. A NEW SCHOOL YEAR MEANS A NEW THEME FOR THE CHARLOTTE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT. THIS YEAR IT’S ENGAGE, EMPOWER AND EXCEL. YOU KNOW, IN OUR IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE REALLY WANT OUR STAFF AND OUR STUDENTS TO FIND SHALER AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT TO BE A PLACE THAT THEY CAN THRIVE ACADEMICALLY, SOCIALLY, ATHLETICALLY AND THROUGH OUR PERFORMING PERFORMING ARTS. ALSO, NEW THIS YEAR, THE DISTRICT IS REVAMPING ITS OFF, OFF AND AWAY CELL PHONE POLICY. THIS IS NOT AN OUTRIGHT CELL PHONE BAN AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, BUT EMPHASIZES THE IDEA OF TIME AND PLACE COMPLETELY TAKING CELL PHONES AWAY FROM STUDENTS DON’T TEACH THEM RESPONSIBLE USE, SO WE WANT TO AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, TEACH THEM RESPONSIBLE USE. THE DISTRICT’S STUDENT RUN CAFE AT CHARLOTTE AREA HIGH SCHOOL IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE GROWING THIS YEAR AS WELL. AND AGAIN, WE HEAR SO MUCH FROM EMPLOYERS THAT KIDS, ONE OF THE SKILLS KIDS DO NOT HAVE IS SOFT SKILLS. SO THERE’S A LOT OF FOCUS ON THAT. AND WHEN WE HEAR THAT FROM EMPLOYERS, WE CAN SEE THAT WE’RE GIVING THEM THAT ADVANTAGE. SUPERINTENDENT BRIAN OBLAK SAYS THEY’RE ALSO WORKING TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION. SO EVERYONE IN THE SHALER AREA KNOWS WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE DISTRICT. SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT OUR ENTIRE SCHOOL COMMUNITY IS GOING TO SEE IS ENHANCED COMMUNICATIONS TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TO BEGIN TO TELL OUR STORY OF THE POSITIVE PIECES THAT ARE HAPPENING WITHIN THE WALLS OF OUR SCHOOL. Because of Wednesday’s heat forecast, the Shaler Area School District is implementing a half day for students and staff.The dismissal times for each school will be:High school: 11:45 a.m.Middle school: 12:15 p.m.Elementary school: 12:30 p.m.Primary schools: 1 p.m. The district said the decision was made because there’s not enough time to cool down the buildings overnight. When it comes to middle and high school sports, the district said head coaches will make those decisions.
