The cult series from the 2000s is back in nostalgia mode.
At a time when some are talking about the renaissance of 2000s fashion, known as Y2K, the return of this flagship Disney Channel sitcom is proof of this. Fifteen years after its last episode aired, Wizards of Waverly Place, series produced by the teen channel from 2007 to 2012, is back in force with, in addition to a good dose of magic, a big dose of nostalgia for those who grew up with the Russo family. Selena Gomez (Alex) and David Henrie (Justin) take up their magic wand again in this sequel, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place (Wizard Beyond Waverly Place) to train a powerful witch and teach her how to master her powers.
But now, Justin is a family man and leads a completely normal life with his wife (Mimi Gianopulos), and their two sons, Milo and Roman. It's been years since he gave up his powers. Will he manage to juggle the safety of the wizarding future with that of the “normal” world? The first nostalgic trailer has just been shared.
Billy (Janice LeAnn Borwn), the young witch, student of the Russo brother recalls the strong character of Alex, the character played by Selena Gomez. It is also she who will beg her brother to become her teacher. But be careful! If the trailer puts the actress forward, she would actually only be present in the pilot episode.
As in the past, the brother and sister bicker gently. The atmosphere that emerges from these first visuals recalls the last episodes of the original series, with these sets, these special effects around magic, and the famous school setting. But the years have passed and Justin is no longer a teenager. He discovers what his own parents, Jerry and Theresa felt when they had to manage the magic of their children. Moreover, these two, David DeLuise, and Maria Canal Barrera should also make their return in a few episodes.
If the series is a success, should we hope for the return of other Disney Channel sitcoms? Many of them have launched the careers of current talents, such as Shake it Up and Zendaya, Raven Phenomenon and Raven Symoné, Sonny and Demi Lovato, as well as Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus – who gave an emotional speech at D23 thanking first-generation fans and the series, when she received the Disney Legend Award.
Wizards of Waverly Place will therefore resume on October 29 on Disney Channel as it did back then, but also on Disney +. Now, the question we ask ourselves is, will Selena Gomez sing the theme song as she did for the original series?
