Two New York State Police vehicles were struck by a suspected drunk driver while investigating another drunk driving incident.
According to a news release from the New York State Police, on Saturday, November 16, around midnight, two officers were struck by a gray 2004 Toyota RAV4 on the boardwalk in Babylon, New York.
The crash occurred while the two officers were investigating a 2018 GMC Arcadia that struck a Department of Transportation headlight in a construction zone.

Authorities said that while they were investigating the other incident, Jaikaran Ramrookum, 72, struck the patrol vehicles.
The first car was thrown into the second car, police said.
State police photos show the patrol cars as well as the SUV heavily damaged following the crash.
The soldiers rushed to the aid of the civilians involved in the accident, only to realize that they themselves had suffered some minor injuries.
“It was only once their adrenaline began to fade that they recognized their own injuries,” the statement said.

All parties were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Ramrookum was charged with driving under the influence (unclassified misdemeanor).
New York State Police called the incident “disappointing,” reminding drivers not to drive under the influence.
“This situation is serious and unfortunate. It is disappointing when individuals make choices that endanger the lives of others, particularly those who work to improve our roads and protect the public. This incident reminds drivers to not only drive sober but to be aware of their surroundings, slow down and move over,” the release said.
