The director returns to his concept, while the horror franchise is still wreaking havoc in cinemas.
It's a horror saga that grossed $1.2 billion at the box office. Saw celebrates its 20th anniversary this week. It was on the occasion of Halloween 2004 that Jigsaw set up his first trap in dark rooms.
At the time, a low-budget independent film, Saw then spanned eleven terrifying films. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, James Wan discusses the franchise's legacy in an interview with People magazine and he recalls:
“I never thought we'd be making all these sequels… I was very lucky. We just thought at the time that we were making a low-budget movie, that was going to go straight to video. But it was such a success at the Sundance festival that it was released in theaters and then it worked and so the saga continued and it's pretty incredible!
The creator of the saga also reveals his favorite trap. Because according to him, one torture device stands out from all the others: the one that threatens Amanda Young's character in the very first Saw : “My favorite is definitely the leghold trap!”
Known as the “Reverse Bear Trap”, it is an inverted bear trap, attached to the jaw, and which will open suddenly, literally causing the face of the person wearing it to explode. In the first film SawAmanda Young wakes up with this trap in her mouth. She has only seconds to retrieve a key from the stomach of a barely conscious man before the trap tears off his head.
Amanda emerges victorious by escaping the trap, making her Jigsaw's first known survivor.
Saw 11 will be released in September 2025 in cinemas.
