Rotten Tomatoes, an American review site that has a certain degree of influence and utilisation in film promotion, has introduced a new system to indicate film ratings. When a film's general audience score exceeds a certain threshold, it is given a “Verified Hot” badge.

Rotten Tomatoes has two scores: a “critics score” and an “audience score” called the Tomatometer, the former of which is expressed by the freshness of tomatoes, and the latter by the rising of popcorn. The “critics score” is a number between 0% and 100% that represents the aggregated rating of reviews, and films that achieve a rating of 75% or higher are certified as “Certified Fresh” and are given a badge.

On the other hand, there has been no such badge system for the audience score until now; instead, a rating of 60% was represented by an illustration of popcorn standing up, and 60% was represented by an illustration of popcorn lying down.

The newly introduced “Hot Certification” is only awarded to works that have an audience score of 90% or above and a certain number of reviews.

“We know that our Critics Score 'Guaranteed Fresh' is reserved for films that receive great critical reviews. But what about the films that are loved by general audiences? Shouldn't they be given just as much love? Yes, they are. That's why we're introducing our 'Certified Hot' system,” Rotten Tomatoes announced.

The system has already been rolled out on the site, and the latest films include “Deadpool & Wolverine” with a rating of 95%, “Twisters” with a rating of 91%, and “Inside Out 2” with a rating of 95%. For past films, the system will apply to films released in the U.S. after May 2019.

Rotten Tomatoes often has discrepancies between critic scores and audience scores, sometimes resulting in opposite ratings. This new system considers the ratings of the general audience to be just as important as those of critics, and will add color to movie discussions between fans. It is not essential to indicate the value of a movie solely through numbers, but the “Hot Certified” badge is likely to function as a proof of love from movie fans.
