It's been a while since there have been reports of a new movie and TV drama adaptation of the sci-fi action movie masterpiece, “Robocop,” but now it seems the drama version is moving forward and getting closer to becoming a reality. It has been revealed that James Wan, known for directing the “Aquaman” series, has been appointed executive producer. Deadline and other media outlets have reported.
“Robocop,” released in 1987, is set in a near-future Detroit and tells the story of a police officer killed in the line of duty who is resurrected as a cyborg “Robocop” using the latest technology to fight against evil. A sequel, “Robocop 2,” was released in 1990, a third film, “Robocop 3,” in 1993, and a reboot with the same title as the original in 2014.
The logline for the drama reads, “A massive tech conglomerate teams up with a local police force to deploy technologically advanced enforcers — half-human, half-machine police officers — to fight rising crime,” appearing to follow the concept of the original.
Wan is known for his work on many horror films, including Saw, Insidious, and the Conjuring series, and will be involved in the TV series through his own production company, Atomic Monster. Peter Ocko, who has worked on the sci-fi action drama Extant and the crime drama Elementary, has been appointed as the screenwriter, showrunner, and executive producer. Atomic Monster's Michael Clear and Rob Hackett are also on the executive producer list.
The expansion of the RoboCop franchise was revealed as one of the new projects announced by Amazon Studios after the acquisition of MGM. It is unclear whether the plan for a new movie is still alive, as the TV series has moved forward. At the time, it was also reported that the TV series may come before the movie.
