So the next film from the director of The Witch and Nosferatu would be a family production?

According to Hollywood reporter Jeff Sneider, Robert Eggers reportedly signed with Sony to remake Labyrinth. Not the recent adaptation of the teen novels with Dylan O'Brien, but the fantasy film by Jim Henson in 1986, with David Bowie And Jennifer Connelly to the casting. The pitch?

“A very young romantic girl, feeling uncomfortable in her family, escapes by reading fantastic tales. Her favorite book “The Labyrinth” opens the doors to another world one night. Sarah sees her young brother, Toby, kidnapped by a troop of elves under the orders of the seductive and cruel Jareth She sets out to rescue the child and enters the labyrinth which leads to the kidnapper's palace. 'Labyrinth is both an adventure story and a dive into the dreams and feelings of a young girl on the threshold of maturity.'

The director famous for The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and for the brand new Nosferatu would thus move away from its usual genre, horror. If this new Labyrinth is confirmed, it will also be its first family production, and not R-Rated – not recommended for under 17s unaccompanied by an adult in the United States.

Nosferatu is the best film of 2024 for Sébastien Vaniček

The article specifies that this new Labyrinth is not expected to have digital visual effects, with Eggers preferring to work with the Jim Henson Workshop, the company that produced the original version of the film with puppet creatures and monsters.

Hollywood has been thinking about remaking for several years now Labyrinthalthough Henson's feature film was not particularly popular with critics and audiences when it was released to theaters almost 40 years ago. It has become so over the years, and in 2016, it was announced that Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, Detective Pikachu…) had been hired by this same studio to to write Labyrinth 2. After her, Fede Álvarez (Don't Breathe) was in the running to direct a new version of the film, with Lisa Henson, Henson's daughter, producing. There was also talk of Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) or Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, Black Phone) to realization, without it coming to fruition. We therefore take a grain of salt regarding the director of Nosferatu : we are waiting for confirmation from the studio regarding his arrival on the remake of Labyrinth.

Finally, note that Robert Eggers was recently asked about his favorite family film and that it was not this one that he cited: the director is a fan of Mom, I Missed the Plane!

“It's a timeless film, has he just confided to Konbini. It is impeccably photographed. Unlike many films of this genre, it is not overstuffed. It’s a really well-crafted film.”

Nosferatu has just been released in cinemas, with Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe… Here is its trailer:
