“Because it's a weapon he has in his hand! You have a responsibility to a certain extent.” The filmmaker gives his clear opinion on real weapons on film sets.
When it comes to guns in movies, Quentin Tarantino is an expert. In his first 9 films, the guns have spat fire without mercy. So when asked for his opinion on the drama Rust and the death of Halyna Hutchins, accidentally shot by Alec Baldwin due to a weapon loaded with live ammunition – instead of being loaded with blanks – QT has a very sharp response.
“This is a situation where I think I'm pretty fair in saying that the gunsmith, the person who hands him the gun, is 90% responsible. Responsible for everything that happens with that gun. But the actor also has a share of responsibility, like 10%!” estimated Quentin Tarantinoduring Bill Maher's “Club Random” podcast. The actor is 10% responsible because it is a weapon in his hand! You are a filming partner and therefore you have a responsibility to a certain extent.”
The filmmaker believes that actors should always see the weapons they are supposed to handle on camera before filming begins and “if there are steps to follow, follow them. You have to do this with due diligence. You know it's for real! So follow the steps, make sure the barrel is clear, there's nothing stuck in there. Ask to see the blanks. There you go, it's ready to go..”
Because Quentin Tarantino refuses to ban real guns on sets. No question of using plastic accessories then retouched by visual effects used in post-production:
“And what else? We could add digital erections to porn movies while we're at it… but who wants to watch that? It's exciting to shoot blanks and see the orange, the real orange fire coming out of the cannon, without adding orange fire in post-production!”
Moreover, the director of pulp Fiction and some The Dirty Eight emphasizes that “For all the gunshots fired in movies over the decades, we only have two examples of people being shot dead on set. That's quite a tally, isn't it?
Quentin Tarantino Here we discuss the death of Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow and so Rust. Recall that for the latter, the gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and will serve 18 months in prison. The first assistant director also pleaded guilty. As for Alec Baldwinthe involuntary manslaughter proceedings were dismissed.
