Plains, Georgia readying for visitors to honor Jimmy Carter’s life and legacy
Neighbors in President Jimmy Carter’s hometown are preparing to welcome thousands who will honor his life over the next several days.“Well, it is sad. He was a huge part of our community, but I kind of take away from it — it’s a time to celebrate his life,” Kelly Kight, a Plains business owner, told sister station WJCL.Everything moves a bit slower in a town like Plains. Everything except for news of the death of their hometown boy.Within hours of the announcement, Kight sprang into action replacing the Christmas garland with red, white and blue bows, tied just for this occasion. “You want Plains to be prepared. You want Plains to look nice, you want it to welcome the nation, the country, into our small community,” said Kight. Kight isn’t the only one, we found this landscaping crew out bright and early, making sure Plains looks its Sunday best.“Everything you’re seeing is happening locally. Ms. Kelly grew up here in Plains, I grew up here in Plains, so I think it’s just an ownership of what’s going on,” said Bud Fuller, Carter’s great nephew.Fuller says he raced back home after hearing the news the president’s death, the president he knew as “Uncle Jimmy.”“Everything that I can remember him by are personal memories. Him coming to high school baseball games, coming to college baseball games, and just going fishing with him,” Fuller said.Fuller is the grandson of Billy Carter, Jimmy Carter’s brother. He says the family is still reeling and for now just trying stay busy.“You don’t realize the capacity of what Uncle Jimmy is and what he has done until you’re in class taking a college-credited class solely about him,” said Fuller.
