The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works announced the protocols that will be taken to ensure driver safety ahead of the winter storm expected to hit Western Pennsylvania on Monday. According to a statement on behalf of the department released Sunday, 60 salt trucks will be deployed Sunday night at 6 p.m. to pretreat roads in the Pittsburgh area. An additional 70 trucks will be deployed at 6 a.m. Monday to salt roads as drivers begin their morning commute. The department is urging residents to avoid parking their vehicles on the streets as crews work to treat roads. Priority will be given to streets that allow access to hospitals, emergency routes and public safety facilities, the statement said. “As we prepare for another winter weather event, our Public Works crews are stepping up to ensure Pittsburgh’s streets are safe and passable,” Mayor Ed Gainey said in the statement. “Let’s work together to navigate these weather challenges safely.” In an abundance of caution, the statement said, the department will “preemptively” close the following roads when snow begins to fall: Capitol Avenue Newett Street Copperfield Street South Negley Avenue Suffolk Street Rialto Street Impacted roads will reopen on a case-by-case basis depending on current conditions in the area. Drivers are urged to leave early and leave distance between other vehicles while travelling in harsh conditions.
