The San Diego Padres will be without one of their best arms for the rest of the postseason and well beyond.
Joe Musgrove started the second game of a National League Wild Card Series on Wednesday, but was knocked out after just 3⅔ innings because of an elbow strain in his throwing arm.
This is never a good sign, and the worst case scenario has happened.

San Diego announced Friday that Musgrove would undergo Tommy John surgery, also sidelining him for the entire 2025 season.
Musgrove has been hampered by injuries since the 2022 campaign, the best of his career. His season ended early last year after an inflammation of the shoulder capsule. This season didn't start so hot. He compiled a 5.66 ERA in his first 10 starts. San Diego then placed him on a 60-day IL with a bone spur in his right elbow.
Upon his return, Musgrove returned to form, posting a 2.15 ERA in his final nine starts of the season, including an outing in which he allowed six earned runs in 4⅓ innings early last month . That totaled a 3.88 ERA, but he was clearly going in the right direction.

However, on Wednesday night he was removed from the game, walking off the field with a trainer and clearly emotional.
“I'm devastated that I won't be able to finish what we started,” Musgrove said Friday of his “sudden and serious” injury.
“It’s about understanding that this is everything to me.”
Musgrove said that when he had his elbow looked at over the summer, doctors told him it was a “matter of time” before the worst happened.
“For me it was on the wall. The question was when,” he said.
Although Musgrove left the game early, San Diego defeated the Atlanta Braves to advance to the National League Division Series.
This is their third trip to an NLDS since 2020, all of which will come against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
