A former Obama strategist has praised a current Midwestern governor for his “aggressive campaign” to join presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' ticket.

David Axelrod, the chief strategist for former President Obama's presidential campaigns, praised Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in a social media post, amid reports that Walz is on Harris' short list to be her running mate.

“Whether he succeeds or not, there is no doubt that Minnesota Gov. @Tim_Walz is running the most aggressive vice presidential campaign in the field,” Axelrod posted, alongside a glowing Politico report detailing Walz’s “Midwestern grit.”

While much of the discussion about the vice presidential spot has focused on four names — Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper — Walz is included in the broader list along with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Before taking office as governor in 2019, Walz served in Congress for 12 years. Before running for Congress, he served for more than two decades in the National Guard and worked as a social studies teacher.

Walz recently made headlines for calling former President Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, “just plain weird” during an interview on MSNBC last week.

Trump’s team hit back at the Democrat’s “bizarre” campaign on Sunday when Trump spokesman Steven Cheung released a video in which Walz called Trump and Vance “bizarre” while campaigning for Harris. Chueng accused the likely Democratic nominee and her supporters of crossing the line themselves by “trying to make everyone believe the shooting was staged,” a reference to the assassination attempt at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally.
