“Something even more terrifying awaits us…”

After the failures of Terminator: Genisys And Terminator: Dark Fatethe cult franchise launched by James Cameron in 1984, leaves behind live-action films to enjoy a new lease of life through an animated series by Masashi Kudō (best known for his work on Bleach) and Mattson Tomlin (notably co-writer of The Batman). Designed by Japanese studio Production IG, which helmed the classic Ghost in the Shell, Terminator Zero is the animated series that fans are eagerly waiting for.

For this new story, exit Sarah or John Connor. Instead, we find ourselves in 1997, a few days before the Last Judgment. Malcom Lee, an engineer at Cortex Industries, wants to compete with Skynet by designing a new AI system. From the future, in 2022, while the war between the humans surviving the end of the world and the robots rages, a Terminator is sent to eliminate this man and his family. The only obstacle in his way: a mysterious and formidable warrior, Eiko, sent, for her part, to protect Malcom Lee.

Nothing very innovative. In short, a scenario in the Terminator. It is therefore in the realization that Terminator Zero stands out. Already won over by a first trailer that had its effect, the public now discovers a new trailer entitled “for adults”. We quickly understand why. Sensitive souls abstain.

Just watch the first few minutes to get a clear idea of what the series has in store. Reminiscent of one of the scenes from one of the first installments, the opening scene shows survivors discovered and killed in their hideout by the Terminator. It's a no-brainer, the whole thing will be tinged with hemoglobin… and not just a little!

“Something even more terrifying awaits us.”

Smashed heads, bullets fired and torsos punctured, limbs torn off, blood, there is indeed everywhere in this mouth-watering trailer. As well as fighting. Soaked in tension, screams of terror, and elements of the past interspersed with those of the future, Terminator Zero promises to be gory and distressing.

Its screenwriter and showrunner, Mattson Tomlin, had warned us. Interviewed by Empirethe latter explained their desire to incorporate elements from the world of slashers and J-Horror – Japanese horror as seen in the franchise Ring by Hideo Nakata:

“We focused on darkness and figured out what we could show and what we couldn't.”

To delve a little deeper into this bloody and terrifying universe, Netflix has also shared the first six minutes of the series. In 2022, Eiko is hunted by a Terminator who has decimated all the men in his path. The walls are covered in their blood. Then begins the game of cat and mouse. What follows is a vision of the Last Judgement as we are used to seeing it, and the brutal awakening in 1997 where everything is at stake.

All voiced by Timothy Oliphant as the killer robot, Rosario Dawnson and Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria in House of the Dragon). Terminator Zero will be available from August 29 on Netflix and will contain eight episodes.
