Bong Joon-ho teases “his most human film” to date.
You never know what to expect from a movie. Bong Joon-ho. Parasite swept across the planet – and the Oscars – like a hurricane virulently sweeping away the codes of the genre. Memories of Murder deployed its noble line of dark thriller, with its particularly stunt detectives. And in the middle of the monster movie The Hostcame a comical piece in the middle of a funeral.
But what Bong looks for above all is stories where capitalism is a burden that man must carry day after day. Sysiphe reloaded: the rewriting of the myth can be seen again in Mickey 17 (in cinemas January 29, 2025) with Robert Pattinsonwho plays Mickey, a galley slave of intergalactic conquest sent to the turbine by successive clonings.
Robert Pattinson: “It's the funniest and weirdest scenario of my career”
For the magazine EmpireBong also declares that Mickey 17 would be “the most human story“that he has staged. And as in his previous works, the portrait of humanity will not be flattering. “Basically it's a story about how pathetic humans can be.“, he explains. “You can almost smell every character in the film – their urine and dirty socks.” It's Pattison who sticks to it, continuing his momentum of films with extra soul.
Pattinson (the Pattinsons?) will play Mickey clones responsible for acclimatizing the frozen world of Niflheim – inhabited by vile creatures nicknamed “the crawlers” – for humans. Only, there is a problem: Mickey 18 finds himself printed prematurely, before the death of Mickey 17. And the coexistence of the two will prove potentially disastrous for his (their?) future. Especially when the anti-replica politician Marshall, played by Mark Ruffalo, comes into the picture.
