Mel Gibson to film sequel to The Passion of the Christ next year

Twenty years later, the American actor-director will finally complete his project.

We already told you about it last year, this time it's official. According to the Italian press agency Italpress, Mel Gibson is indeed scouting for his next film… the rest of The Passion of Christ. So, he went to Malta for a five-day visit to discuss a possible film project with local authorities. An event because the actor and director met with Maltese Prime Minister Roberta Abela to discuss logistical and financial issues among others. According to some reports, the film could also be shot in Israel, Morocco and Italy.

Mel Gibson's desire to direct The Passion of the Christ 2already named Resurrectionis several years old. The script itself has undergone numerous revisions over the years, with Gibson and his co-writer Randall Wallace, who was nominated for an Oscar for Braveheartare said to have written at least six versions. The latter confirmed in April that it was finished. Few details have leaked, however, except that the sequel could be more spiritual and metaphysical than the first part, the screenwriter confirmed, sibylline. Mel Gibson expressed himself in 2022 in these terms:

It's not a linear narrative… you have to juxtapose the central event that I'm trying to tell with everything that surrounds it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and it's kind of like science fiction. It's a big story. It's a difficult concept, and it took me a long time to focus and find a way to tell this story in a way that was really compelling.

The double Oscar winner for Braveheart (Best Picture and Best Director in 1996) went so far as to describe the project as a “acid trip“, fueling online speculation that the sequel will have a supernatural slant.

Filming on the sequel is expected to begin in early 2025, following Gibson's promotional tour for his upcoming action thriller. Flight Riskwhich is scheduled for release in January.
