Creator Brad Ingelsby explains why.
No new investigation for Mare Sheehan. Kate Winslet will not return in season 2 of Mare of Easttown. Instead, the creator Brad Ingelsbyhas imagined a new thriller set in Pennsylvania: Task will be carried by Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent leading a special team investigating a heist gone wrong.
“We discussed the idea of doing a second season of Mare of Easttown“, Ingelsby confirmed to American journalists. “But Mare's journey in this series was so moving… I like telling stories that are really moving, and it was too difficult to find an emotional story that could rival the one in season 1, which was the loss of her 'a son and having to deal with it.”
Without the possibility of doing better, he preferred to give up Mare of Easttown to do Task : “I feel like this series exists in the same world as Mare. We're in the same geographic area (Pennsylvania, in the suburbs of Philadelphia), but it's a very different story. And then at that point, I was more interested in the idea of doing something different and new, that could at the same time evoke the same type of world that Mare lives in.”
Never envisaged as a season 2, Task will be released in 2025 on HBO (and Max in France) and will feature Tom Pelphrey (Ozark), Raúl Castillo (Looking), Emilia Jones (Locke & Key), Alison Oliver (Conversations With Friends), Fabien Frankel (house of the Dragon) and Martha Plimpton (The Goonies).
As for a sequel to Mare of Easttownthe door now seems to have closed. Even if Ingelsby admits that in absolute terms, he would be ready “to return to Mare, if we could create a story as compelling as the first…” But obviously, this is not possible.
