“I'm Madonna”.

The end of the biopic trend is clearly not coming any time soon. But while the list of well-known musical personalities that Hollywood deems deserving of a film in their image is starting to shorten, there remains one name that the industry has yet to exploit: Madonna.

In 2020, the singer had teased this project on social media – a film that would look back on her 40-year career. And since you can never be better served than by yourself, she was in charge of this film herself. But three years later, recalled by the limelight, she decided to abort the idea and instead conquer the stadiums of the planet in a sold-out tour. Now recovered from her efforts, the singer of “Like a Virgin” is ready to make her biopic a reality.

To announce the return, Madonna took her typewriter out of her closet and shared several photos of herself at work on Instagram.

Zooming in, we discover that the scenario seems to have been written in collaboration with a certain ECW. According to The Hollywood ReporterIt would be by Erin Cressinda Wilsonscreenwriter of Fur And Chloe and who took over after the departure of Diablo Cody (screenwriter of Juno). But that's not all. Above the initials, what could be a title is visible: Who's That Girl?

An obvious nod to one of the first films in which Madonna starred. Of the same title, released in 1987 and directed by James Foley, Who's That Girl? tells the story of Nikki Finn (Madonna), an unusual woman wrongly accused of killing her boyfriend and sent to prison. Upon her release, she calls on her lawyer to find those responsible. A love story ensues… At the time, the film was a huge success.

Warner Bros.

While Alexa Demie and Florence Pugh both auditioned to play the singer of True Blueit is finally Julia Garner (Inventing Anna, Ozark) who will have the task.

But what exactly will this biopic be about? For now, it's hard to know – especially since in her forty-year career, Madonna has not been idle: from “Like A Prayer” to “Vogue” via “Holiday”, the artist has a long list of monumental hits, has crossed styles, broken taboos and provoked by mixing religion and sexuality in her songs and videos. Muse of Jean Paul Gaultier, she was also an actress. She played in Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy And Evita – for which she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

According to an anonymous source cited by Hollywood Reporterit was proposed to split the film into two or to make a mini-series: “You have forty years of real successes there, and it's very difficult to put all that in one film.”

In addition to Julia Garner, Julia Fox was also cast as Debi Mazar. A longtime friend of Madonna's, she was her makeup artist, and made numerous appearances in her music videos such as “Papa Don't Preach.”

Who's That Girl? does not have a release date yet.
