Fourth of July: Pittsburgh-area fireworks, events, holiday closures

UNIT AT UPMC MERCY. THIS GUY IS MEANT TO BE YOU. HOPEFULLY YOU’RE HAVING A BETTER DAY THAN HIM, BUT HE IS YOUR SIZE. HE IS WEARING YOUR CLOTHES AND CAN BE INJURED THE SAME WAY YOU CAN. THREE, TWO, ONE HERE AT THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY FIRE AND POLICE TRAINING ACADEMY, EXPERTS PUT ON A DEMONSTRATION TO SHOW US SOME OF THE MANY WAYS 4TH OF JULY AND SUMMER CELEBRATIONS CAN GO WRONG. THOSE BURN INJURIES REALLY INCREASE AROUND THE TIME OF THE 4TH OF JULY, WITH ALMOST 50% OF FIREWORK RELATED INJURIES OCCURRING WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY. THE INJURIES RANGE FROM LARGE FIREWORK INJURIES TO SPARKLER INJURIES. ALSO, BURNS FROM FIRE PITS AND GRILLS, BURN INJURIES, PARTICULARLY THE ONES THAT WE SEE AROUND THE 4TH OF JULY, OFTEN AFFECT AREAS OF FUNCTION, SO YOUR HANDS, YOUR FACE, YOUR FEET, THAT TYPE OF THING, AND EVEN VERY SMALL INJURIES CAN HAVE LIFELONG CONSEQUENCES. SOME COMMON MYTHS WERE BUSTED TO TODAY, STARTING WITH WATER BUCKETS. MANY PEOPLE THINK FIREWORKS ARE DISARMED ONCE THEY’RE PLACED IN WATER, BUT AS YOU’LL SEE HERE, NOT TRUE. ANOTHER COMMON MISCONCEPTION SPARKLERS AREN’T DANGEROUS. MOST PEOPLE THINK, OH KID, THIS IS SAFE. KIDS CAN HANDLE IT. BUT WE’RE JUST GOING TO SHOW WITH THE VARIETY OF CLOTHES, WHETHER IT’S A COTTON BLEND, POLYESTER OR WHATEVER, HOW QUICK EVEN THE SPARKLER CAN SET YOUR CLOTHING ON FIRE. THEN OF COURSE, YOU HAVE THE BIG FIREWORKS. FERNHOLZ. IF A MORTAR GOES OFF WHILE IT’S STILL IN YOUR HAND, WELL, YOU’LL SEE FIRE PITS ARE ANOTHER SEEMINGLY INNOCENT PLACE WHERE ACCIDENTS CHANGE, LIVES. WE SEE A TON OF INJURIES OF PEOPLE FALLING INTO FIRE PITS AND WHAT WE’D LIKE PEOPLE TO DO IS REALLY PEOPLE LOVE TO HAVE THEIR FIRE PITS, AND THAT’S GREAT. AND TO ROAST MARSHMALLOWS. BUT IF YOU’RE GOING TO DO THAT, JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A SAFE PERIMETER. YOU DON’T WANT TO SIT TOO CLOSE. YOU DON’T WANT TO STAND TOO CLOSE TO THAT AREA. FINALLY, GRILLS TO KEEP YOUR STATUS AS GRILL MASTER AND NOT HOSPITAL PATIENT, YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL. A LOT OF PEOPLE LEAVE THEIR GRILLS OUT ON THEIR PORCHES ALL YEAR ROUND, AND THEY REALLY DON’T TAKE TAKE THE PROPER TIME TO CLEAN IT. JUST EVEN BASIC THINGS LIKE SPIDER WEBS AND THEIR WEBS ARE VERY STRONG. SO WHEN YOU’RE LIGHTING A PROPANE AND YOU KEEP LIGHTING IT, THAT IT THE WEBS ITSELF CAN HOLD IT. AND NEXT THING YOU KNOW YOU GOT A BIG FIREBALL COMING AT YOU. FINALLY, YOU NEVER WANT TO LEAVE YOUR KIDS UNATTENDED WITH FIREWORKS. SOUNDS VERY OBVIOUS, BUT AS WE JUST SAW IN THAT DEMO, THERE, EVEN THE SEEMINGLY HARMLESS SPARKLER CAN CATCH THEIR CLOTHING ON FIRE, CAUSIN
