“To me, these tunnels represented the inside of his mother's uterus…”
Everyone has their own vision of Goonies. But that of Josh Brolin is still strange…
The Marvel actor was 16 when he played Brandon Walsh, aka “Brand,” Mikey's jocky older brother. On the occasion of the release of his memoir, “From Under the Truck,” the actor recalls (via People Magazine) what he said to Steven Spielberg at the time of filming. The very young Josh then planned to adopt an ultra-intellectual approach to his teenage character:
“To me, Brandon was freaking out in these tunnels, because these underground tunnels represented the inside of his mother's uterus. So he was metaphorically trying to cut the cord.”
Josh Brolin recalls pitching his vision to Spielberg, who quickly rejected his proposal : “He looked at me and said, 'Yeah, but no. Just play what's in the script, it'll be great.' And he wasn't being mean when he said that, he was right.”
The Goonies will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year and Josh Brolin admits that it is “probably the greatest experience of my life“. He details:
“It was a moment out of time. I was 16 and it should never have happened. I had just been kicked out of my mother's house. I went to live on my father's couch, who lived with someone 'one at the time. He was telling me that I needed to get back on the right path. I had just passed 350 auditions and people said to me: “You should really find another profession. not good at that” But. I loved taking on this challenge.”
