He is currently writing the script with House of Cards creator Beau Willimon.
A host of projects Star Wars have been launched by Disney in recent years, but at the moment only The Mandalorian & Grogu appears in the studio's official schedules. But James Mangold still believes that his film in the distant past of the distant Galaxy will see the light of day.
In an interview with Movieweb this week, James Mangold reveals that he is still working on his Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. In passing, he confirms that the story will take place in a past“very, very, very distant” and that's what appealed to Mangold, who wrote the script with Beau Willimon (House of Cards).
“For me, the really important aspects are the freedom to create something new. Beau and I, as far as Star Wars is concerned, are working on a script, and we'll see what happens […] Will we find a way to say something original?”
James Mangold goes further and announces that his Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi will take place “25,000 years before any other Star Wars film.” A big prequel which will allow him to have his hands free to talk about the birth of the Force or the dark side, without being encumbered by existing canons: “It’s an area and a playground that I have always [voulu explorer] and who inspired me when I was a teenager. I'm not really interested in writing a Star Warsif it's to be constrained by all the traditions, all the mythology that exists at this point, almost immutable so that you can't really please anyone.”
James Mangold had already dared to resume his style Indiana Jones with The Clock of Destiny. Without success at the box office. But the filmmaker took a step back: “Success is never guaranteed, but the reality is that the best way to convince people is to move them, to somehow find the humanity in a situation. Whether it's a giant franchise or of a small dramatic film, whatever it is, the films that you remember are generally the ones that move you. The ones that leave you cold, even if they are intelligent, even if they are spectacular, even if they are. are dazzling, are in somehow replaced by the next dazzling object that comes out…”
Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi does not have an official release date at the moment.
