A long-range missile fired from Yemen early Sunday landed in central Israel, the Israeli military said.

The attack triggered air raid sirens in the region and local media carried photos of what appeared to be a fragment of a missile or interceptor that landed at a train station in the central city of Modiin.

No casualties or damage were reported from the missile, but authorities observed a fire in the rural area.

In addition to the attack from Yemen, the Israeli military said about 40 projectiles were fired from Lebanon early Sunday. Some were intercepted while others fell in open areas, the military said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's missile strike from Yemen.

Local media reported sounds of explosions from the missile, but the Israeli military later said the noise came from the interceptors.

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have repeatedly fired drones and missiles toward Israel since the start of Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, which began after the terror group launched an attack on the Jewish state on October 7.

Almost all attacks were intercepted over the Red Sea.

No injuries were reported from the projectiles. Israeli fire and rescue services are working to extinguish fires caused by projectiles that fell in open areas.

Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas nearly a year ago, Iran and its-funded terrorist groups have attacked Israeli and American targets, leading to retaliatory strikes by Israel and its Western allies.

Iran backs terrorist groups across the region – Hamas, the Houthis and Lebanon’s Hezbollah – which have exchanged fire with Israel almost daily since the Gaza war began more than 11 months ago. Iran and its allies have said their actions were a show of solidarity with the Palestinians.

In July, an Iranian-made drone launched by the Houthis struck Tel Aviv, killing one person and wounding ten others. In response, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.

The Houthis have also repeatedly attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea, which they claim is a blockade imposed on Israel in support of the Palestinians. However, most of the ships targeted have no connection to Israel.

Tens of thousands of people on both sides of the Israeli-Lebanese border have been displaced by the strikes.
