The latest installment of the “Jurassic World” series“Jurassic World Rebirth (original title)”Will this be the beginning of a “new trilogy”? Director Gareth Edwards suggested this to Entertainment Weekly.

This work is set five years after “Jurassic World: The New Ruler” (2022). Although it bears the title “Jurassic World,'' as per the wishes of executive producer Steven Spielberg, it is a return to the origins of “Jurassic Park'' (1993), which started it all.

“This is a great love letter to Steven Spielberg and his early work. It's like a greatest hits collection of all the aspects of his films that I loved as a kid.”says Edwards. “At its heart, it's a story of adventure and survival across the island.”

The main character is Zora Bennett, an operative played by Scarlett Johansson. Dinosaurs now find it difficult to survive on Earth, and only a few survive in isolated environments just below the equator. Bennett signs a contract with a pharmaceutical company and participates in a mission to secure DNA from three dinosaurs in order to develop a drug that will save humanity. The group consists of reliable leader Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and paleontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), who is not specialized in special missions.

Director Edwards likens the trio of Bennett, Kincaid, and Dr. Loomis to the relationship between police chief Brody, fisherman Quint, and oceanographer Hooper in Jaws (1975). “It's a really fun relationship between three different characters that overlap. It's more like, 'Who is the best among them?' rather than a love triangle. “It's like they're fighting over something.”

Joining them are Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), a pharmaceutical company representative who Edwards says is “a bit James Bond-like,'' and the Delgado family, who were aboard a civilian ship that capsized during the attack. . Bennett and Kincaid and their team must not only complete the mission, but also protect the family to the end.

“Everything quickly goes awry, and it becomes a situation that Jurassic fans will enjoy,” Edwards insists.“Once the adventure begins, the movie goes straight to the end credits. Enjoy the chase, escape, fear, horror, and sudden developments, all in a series of big scenes and dinosaurs.”.

As with his previous film, The Creator (2023), Edwards shot most of the film in Thailand. They ventured into rivers and swamps, and filmed sea scenes on the Mediterranean island of Malta. With the exception of some stunts, most scenes were shot in real settings rather than in a studio, so the dinosaurs appear in realistic environments in the movie. This is also a further expansion of the experiment in The Creator.

After Jurassic Park, which paved the way for CG, we got caught up in an arms race for spectacle, and I feel like we lost track of the path we should take.. Jurassic Park was a very powerful movie, even though VFX was used in only a few dozen shots. So I thought I'd go back to tricks and ideas that can play with the audience and create suspense and tension. I wanted to create the feeling that I had when I was younger. ”

However, it seems that the filming was extremely grueling, with Edwards recalling, “I think all the actors went through incredible hardships, just like the characters.'' Photographing the ocean is particularly difficult, to the point where he says, “I'll never do it again.'' “But I'm glad I did it. Even though it's physically demanding and sometimes a near-death experience, if you do it well, there's a big reward.''

The film has finished filming and is currently in the midst of post-production. Edwards seems to be feeling a great response.“In a way, it felt like a new trilogy. It felt like a new chapter[in the Jurassic series]had begun.”says. “I don't know Universal's plans, so I can't speak for the studio,'' he added.

The movie “Jurassic World: Rebirth” is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 2, 2025..
