Impact Day – Rain and wind for Western PA

Wet, windy, and unseasonably warm to close out the final weekend of 2024.

DECEMBER 31ST. CHECKING BACK IN WITH PITTSBURGH’S ACTION WEATHER METEOROLOGIST JOE SWEAT. JOE, A LITTLE BIT OF AN IMPACT DAY. IT IS. WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS FOR SEVERAL DAYS NOW, THAT IT PROBABLY WAS GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF A NOT SO EASY END TO THE FINAL WEEKEND OF 2024. SO TODAY, AN IMPACT DAY. WE HAVE SCATTERED SHOWERS OUT THERE THIS MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON. THE COVERAGE OF THE RAIN PICKS UP. IT BECOMES AREA WIDE. ALSO, SOME OF THE HEAVIEST RAIN WILL FALL BETWEEN ABOUT NOON AND 7 P.M. WE ALSO CAN’T RULE OUT AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM THAT COULD PACK SOME GUSTY WINDS. SO WHERE DO THINGS STAND HERE? EARLY THIS MORNING? A BATCH OF SCATTERED SHOWERS WORKING IN ACROSS WESTERN PA. A LOT OF THAT ACTION IS NOW BUILT NORTH OF I-70. AS WE LOOK FROM AROUND THE BURGETTSTOWN AREA, SPREADING OVER INTO THE NORTH HILLS, EVEN PARTS OF THE ALLEGHENY VALLEY RIGHT ALONG THE BORDER BETWEEN WESTMORELAND, ARMSTRONG AND INDIANA COUNTIES. YOU CAN FIND MORE OF THAT ACTIVITY GETTING CLOSER TO KITTANNING, NORTH OF BUTLER. ALSO TOWARDS NEW CASTLE. YOU WILL NOTICE, THOUGH, THE RAIN IS A LITTLE BIT MORE WIDESPREAD AND HEAVIER CLOSER TO CLEVELAND. THAT’S WHERE THE BULK OF THE WIDESPREAD RAIN WILL STAY, AT LEAST INITIALLY. BUT THIS IS A BIG SYSTEM THAT STRETCHES ALL THE WAY BACK THROUGH PARTS OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY, AND THAT IS GOING TO BE MOVING CLOSER TO US AS WE GO THROUGH THE DAY. SO THIS REALLY IS A DAY LONG EVENT, A LITTLE EASIER GOING THOUGH HERE THIS MORNING IF YOU’RE OFF TO CHURCH BRUNCH, JUST TRAVEL TO SEE SOME FRIENDS AND FAMILY. STILL, YOU WILL BE DODGING SOME SCATTERED RAIN CHANCES BETWEEN ABOUT NOW AND NOONTIME. HEADS UP AS WE GO INTO THE MIDDLE PART OF THE DAY. IT’S STILL GOING TO BE INCREDIBLY WARM. HIGH TEMPERATURES, LOW AND MID 60S TODAY, BUT HERE WE GO. THAT WIDESPREAD RAIN MARCHING IN MIXED IN A HANDFUL OF DOWNPOURS, POSSIBLY EVEN SOME GUSTY THUNDERSTORMS AS WELL. WE’LL KEEP AN EYE ON THOSE. THE STRONG WINDS WILL BE THE MAIN THREAT. THE SYSTEM THOUGH DOES HAVE A HISTORY OF PRODUCING TORNADOES. SO AGAIN, WE COULD SEE SOME BRIEF SPIN UPS. BUT OVERALL IS A LOW END RISK FOR US GOING FORWARD INTO THE AFTERNOON. MOST OF THE STEADY RAIN GETS OUT OF HERE BETWEEN ABOUT SIX 7:00, CLOSE TO ALLEGHENY COUNTY. GIVE IT UNTIL ABOUT EIGHT 9:00. FOR THOSE OF YOU IN THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS. ONCE THE RAIN CLEARS OUT, WIND IS GOING TO CALM DOWN. THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF MOISTURE THAT TRIES TO SNEAK IN EARLY TOMORROW THAT LOOKS TO STAY MOSTLY NORTH OF THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH. SHOULD BE FALLING AS A COLD RAIN, BUT CLOSER TO I-80. A FEW WET SNOWFLAKES COULD BE MIXING IN. HOW MUCH RAIN ARE WE GOING TO GET? ANYWHERE FROM A HALF INCH TO AN INCH WITH SOME OF THOSE HIGHER TOTALS MAINLY BEING PAINTED CLOSER TO THE OHIO BORDER OVER THE NEXT FOUR DAYS, WE’RE TRIMMING TEMPERATURES BACK WILL BE CLOSE TO 50 MONDAY AND NEW YEAR’S EVE. NEW YEAR’S EVE IS ANOTHER IMPACT DAY FOR SHOWERS WILL BE DEVELOPING INTO THE AFTERNOON. WE’LL KEEP SOME OF THAT WET WEATHER AROUND FOR FIRST NIGHT PITTSBURGH CELEBRATIONS. BEYOND THAT, TEMPERATURES GET EVEN COLDER STILL INTO THE EARLY DAYS OF THE NEW YEAR. TEMPERATURES FALLING THROUGH THE DAY ON NEW YEAR’S DAY, AS WE’LL SEE EVENTUALLY, SOME SNOWFLAKES TAKING OVER, NOT ONLY A LOT COLDER, BUT ALSO SOME CHANCES FOR SOME LIGHT SNOW. THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. SO LOOKING AHEAD TO THAT NEW YEAR’S EVE SETUP, WE WILL SEE ADDITIONAL SHOWERS DEVELOPING INTO THE AFTERNOON. SHOULD BE GENERALLY LIGHT AND IN A SCATTERED FASHION. EVEN AS WE APPROACH THE MIDNIGHT HOUR. SO OBVIOUSLY MAKING SOME PLANS. IF YOU ARE HEADING DOWNTOWN FOR ANY OF THOSE NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS. AND AGAIN, WE ARE GETTING COLDER AS WE HEAD INTO THE START OF THE NEW YEAR. RIGHT ON CUE. WINTER IS SHOWING UP SO THAT 44 MORE THAN LIKELY HAPPENING AT MIDNIGHT. WE’LL BE SETTLING INTO THE 30S THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON JANUARY 1ST. AND TO ADD TO THE FESTIVE FEELING, A LITTLE SNOW AS WELL COMING OUR WAY. SO. RIGHT. ALL OF A SUDDEN WINTER SHOWS UP IN FULL FORCE, RIGHT? IT WAS INCREDIBLY WARM YESTERDAY. STILL GOING TO BE T
